Not a role-playing game in the standard sense of the term, the mercenary commander you control builds his armies through conquest of enemies and plain old bribery (paying mercenaries with gold). Encompassing elements of other genres such as adventuring and role-playing, the game's real strength lies in the wonderful storyline that is fleshed out during game play and the method in which the designers reveal the story through linkage of the scenarios.
